Every month in our Plant Spotlight series, we explore a botanical that has shaped traditional herbal practices around the world. This month we're highlighting Holy Basil, also known as Tulsi—an herb revered not only for its medicinal properties but also for its deep cultural and spiritual significance.
While researching Holy Basil I was fascinated to learn that it is considered one of the most sacred plants in India and is closely associated with the goddess Lakshmi. For centuries, it has been grown outside homes and temples, where it symbolizes purity, protection and devotion.
According to The Times of India article I linked below, in Hindu tradition, Holy Basil is believed:
- Symbolize purity and devotion
- Offer spiritual protection
- Promotes harmony within the home
- Encourages a deeper connection to the divine
Holy Basil’s Spiritual and Botanical Background
Native to the Southeast Asia, Holy Basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum syn. O.sanctum) is an aromatic member of the Lamiaceae family valued for both culinary and medicinal use, especially as an adaptogenic. In Ayurveda, it’s known as “The Queen of Herbs”, “Mother Medicine of Nature” and the “Elixir of Life” due to its traditional use as a tonic supporting overall wellness.
Holy Basil can be grown as a potted plant from seed. Its aerial parts are what are generally used before its flowers open in early summer.
Traditional Herbal Benefits of Holy Basil:
Holy Basil is traditionally used in Ayurvedic practices but is being scientifically studied for its potential medicinal benefits due to its pharmacological actions. Some research indicates it has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, pain-relieving and fever reducing properties. Let’s take a look at a few noted supportive benefits:
- Adaptogenic Support
Holy Basil is best known as an adaptogen – a class of herbs traditionally used to help the body adapt to physical and emotional stress while supporting overall resilience. Modern research continues to explore its effects on stress response, cortisol regulation and cardiovascular health.
- Glucose Support
Emerging research suggests Holy Basil may help support healthy blood glucose regulation. While more research is needed, preliminary studies have explored its potential role in being supportive for those with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.
- Respiratory Support
Holy Basil has traditionally been used to support respiratory wellness such as colds, coughs and bronchitis as well as providing support to help treat asthma.
Ways to Enjoy Holy Basil

Why I Love This Herb
One of the things I love most about Holy Basil is how beautifully it bridges traditional herbal wisdom and modern scientific interest. It's an herb I've continued to appreciate more throughout my own herbal education, which is why I chose to include it in our Inner Ease tincture. Its long history of supporting emotional balance and resilience makes it one of my favorite botanicals to reach for during particularly stressful seasons.
Con amor,
Christina
